PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Principal Dr. Betty Cardenas

Dra. Betty Cardenas

As we embrace the month of November, I want to take a moment to reflect on the progress our students have made and share some important updates and upcoming events.

Academic Progress

November marks the halfway point of the semester. Our students took a beginning-of-year MAP assessment that tells us where they are with their level of understanding. Using those results, teachers have set goals and differentiated instruction to give students the instruction that addresses their instructional needs. In November, all our students will be taking a Fall benchmark that will be used as a checkpoint to monitor their learning progress and help determine future instruction. I encourage you to check in with your child about their classes and any upcoming assignments or projects. Our teachers are available for extra help, so please remind your child to reach out if they need support.

Attendance Status

Consistent attendance is crucial for your child’s academic success. Each day of school provides valuable learning experiences, and being present helps students engage fully in their education. Research shows that students who miss school frequently may struggle academically. We are committed to helping all our students succeed, so we will continue to monitor attendance and reaching out to families when we notice concerning patterns. If your child is facing challenges that affect their ability to attend school regularly, please let us know. We are here to support you and your child, whether through academic assistance, counseling, or other resources. Additionally, we love to reward our students when they are meeting campus expectations. We have done bi-weekly raffles for prizes, bi-weekly treats, and a fun experience or larger treat for perfect attendance of the Six Weeks. Recently, we also started a competition between the three grade levels. The grade level with the highest attendance for the week earns an extra day of free-seating the following week. In November, and upcoming months, we will continue with these incentives and supports to help our families increase their child’s school attendance.

Extra-Curricular

Our students have actively participated in the extra-curricular activities of their choice. Fine Arts have had multiple performances and/or competitions. Our athletes have concluded the football and volleyball season with numerous wins and lots of team spirit! Now, we have begun soccer, cross country, and basketball season. I look forward to more smiles and team spirit throughout the seasons. If you’re not connected already, I encourage you to connect with us through our Domingo Treviño Facebook page for updates and pictures of team events.

Campus Events

We initiated the year with our Centennial Night where we welcomed our students and families to initiate the school year. Since then, we’ve had two meetings of Coffee with the Principal and Title I meetings where campus information was shared. We recently hosted a trunk or treat as a free community event through partnership with local businesses and organizations. For our students, we had student assemblies to introduce the leadership team, share campus supports, expectations, and facilitate a student pact where they pledge to do their part to keep themselves, others and the campus safe. By now, our students also had three opportunities to mingle with friends during school dances. In November, we look forward to hosting a Loteria night on November 20th as a fundraiser for students and staff. We will also welcome our military families for recognition during our Veteran’s Day celebration. On November 12th, I ask that all our DTMS families mark their calendars, as we will be hosting a State of the School’s Parent Night where campus data and academic information will be shared. On November 22nd, our students will enjoy our first pep rally for the year, and we will welcome our families to have a Thanksgiving lunch with their children on campus.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I want to thank everyone for making my first couple of months at DTMS a more than pleasant experience! I am so impressed with the level of respect and understanding our students demonstrate, the dedication and expertise of our staff, and the support and willingness to help from our parents.

I look forward to a continued strong partnership, as together, we help our students thrive!

At Your Service,
